From time-to-time, if we are lucky, we come across a book that is extraordinary in its writing; taking the reader on an adventure that puts them right in the middle of the story. Such is the case with Killing Phar Lap.

I, like everyone else, thought I had heard all the possibilities of what killed the great Phar Lap but Mr. Lowry makes one very compelling case for what brought about the end to one of the greatest horses of all time. With each written word you see through the writer’s eyes the events as they unfold. You feel that you can almost reach out and touch the Barons’ of Agua Caliente. It is beautifully written and well researched, and the writing style paints a vivid picture of the times in which Phar Lap lived.

If this was a court of law and the evidence presented in this book introduced, the court would be hard pressed not to agree with the findings as to the cause of death.

Classy writing from a classy sportswriter; well done Mr. Lowry, we done! Thank you for sharing your journey into the dark world that surrounded such a magnificent animal, may he rest in peace!

Biff Lowry is a second-generation career race-tracker.

He remembers accompanying his father, long-time horse racing editor for the Los Angeles Times, Paul Lowry, to Caliente, Santa Anita, Del Mar and Hollywood Park as a young boy. One of his fondest memories, as a youth, was feeding sugar cubes to Seabiscuit.

He got his first job in horse racing in the Hollywood Park publicity department while still a teen-ager and has worked as a hot-walker in the backstretch, the operations department and has been the director of publicity for numerous tracks. He also served a 15-year stint as president, general manager, and CEO of The Red Mile and Tattersalls Sales Co. in Lexington, KY before concluding a seven decade career in racing as part of the management team of a satellite wagering operation in Southern California.

He is the author of two other books on horse racing, A Century of Speed and Hollywood Park from Seabiscuit to Pincay.

His boyhood dream of being a jockey was dashed when he sprouted to over six feet and 170 pounds early in life. He was, however, a high school and college athlete and kept competing through his 87th year being a six-time national champion, and world-ranked, in masters swimming.
